Rocky Points New Airport

Many of you have asked about the new Airport that has been under construction near the Mayan Palace. The aircract you see landed some of the governers during their convention. Here are some photos of the near complete airport. Soon no longer will the family need to jump in their cars for the 4 hour trip. It will just be a quick zoooom to the beach! They say it will be in operation the first quarter of 2009 this means hopefully by the end of May coming into June you can take your new fight, keep you rig in our storage and just head down. Car rentals are starting to spring up in Rocky Point so no need to worry.

Crossing the Border - Passports

U.S. Citizens
- Air Travel
All U.S. citizens including children must present a passport or secure travel document when entering the United States by air.
- Land/Sea Travel
Beginning January 31, 2008, the United States will end the practice of accepting oral declarations of citizenship at the border.
U.S. citizens ages 19 and older must present documentation that proves both identity and citizenship. Identification documents must include a photo, name and date of birth. View the complete list of acceptable documents at CBP.gov for land travel and sea travel.
Children ages 18 and under will only be required to present proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate.
U.S. citizens can also apply for a U.S. Passport Card, which facilitates entry and expedites document processing at U.S. land and sea ports-of-entry when arriving from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda. The card may not be used to travel by air. Otherwise, it carries the rights and privileges of the U.S. passport book and is adjudicated to the exact same standards.

Spring Break Precautions

Over 100,000 American teenagers and young adults travel to resort areas throughout Mexico over Spring Break each year. While the vast majority enjoys their vacation without incident, several may die, hundreds will be arrested, and still more will make mistakes that could affect them for the rest of their lives. Using some common sense will help travelers avoid these unpleasant and dangerous situations.
We encourage all U.S. citizens to phone home periodically to assure family members of your safety and inform them of your whereabouts. Remember, whether you travel to Mexico by land, air, or sea, you are entering a foreign country and are subject to the laws and customs regulations of Mexico.
Entry Requirements
Effective January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air to the United States from Mexico, Canada, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, (or if applicable, an Alien Registration Card, form I-551, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document), to enter or re-enter the United States. American citizens can visit http://travel.state.gov or call 1-877-4USA-PPT (1-877-487-2778) for information on applying for a U.S. passport. Please see Mexico’s Country Specific Information for complete entry requirements.
Mexican Law
While traveling in Mexico, American citizens are subject to Mexican law. An arrest or accident in Mexico can result in a difficult legal or medical situation, sometimes at a great expense to the traveler. Mexican law can impose harsh penalties for violations that would be considered minor in the United States, and U.S. citizenship in no way exempts one from full prosecution under the Mexican criminal justice system. If U.S. citizens find themselves in legal trouble, they should contact the closest U.S. Consulate, U.S. Consular Agency, or the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City. (see "Contact Information" below). U.S. consular officials in Mexico can visit detained American citizens in prison, provide information about the Mexican legal system, and furnish a list of Mexican attorneys, among other assistance. U.S. Consular officials cannot arrange for Mexican officials to release detained American citizens.
Alcohol and Drugs
Excessive alcohol consumption and unruly behavior can lead to serious problems with Mexican authorities. Alcohol is involved in the vast majority of arrests, accidents, violent crimes, rapes, and deaths suffered by American students on Spring Break. Disturbing the peace, lewd or indecent behavior, littering, driving under the influence, drinking on the street or on public transportation, using public transportation without payment, or making obscene or insulting remarks are all considered criminal activities by Mexican authorities. The importation, purchase, possession or use of drugs can incur severe penalties, including imprisonment without bail for up to a year before a case is tried, and imprisonment of several years following a conviction. All individuals 16 years of age or older are tried as adults.
Safety and Security
Standards of security, safety, and supervision may not reach the levels expected in the United States. This has contributed to the deaths of U.S. citizens in automobile accidents, after falls from balconies or into unmarked ditches, by drowning in the ocean as well as in hotel pools, and in water-sports mishaps, among others.
Warning flags on beaches should be taken seriously. If black or red flags are up, do not enter the water. Strong undertow and rough surf are common along beaches throughout Mexico, especially on the Pacific coast, and drownings have occurred when swimmers have been overwhelmed by conditions. Swimming pool drain systems may not comply with U.S. safety standards and swimmers should exercise caution. Do not swim in pools or at beaches without lifeguards. Do not dive into unknown bodies of water, because hidden rocks or shallow depths can cause serious injury or death. If you choose to swim, always exercise extreme caution.
Use only the licensed and regulated "sitio" (SEE-tee-oh) taxis. Some illegitimate taxi drivers are, in fact, criminals in search of victims; users of these taxis have been robbed, kidnapped, and/or raped. Hotels, clubs and restaurants will summon a sitio taxi upon request.
Firearms and Knives
It is best not to carry even a pocketknife into Mexico as this can result in a weapons charge if a knife is found on a traveler who is arrested for a separate offense. Visitors driving across the border should ensure that their vehicles contain no firearms or ammunition. Mexico imposes harsh penalties for bringing as little as one bullet across its borders.
Renting and Operating Vehicles and other Equipment
Visitors should exercise caution when renting vehicles, including jet skis and mopeds. Many are not serviced and in poor condition, and many are uninsured or under-insured. Read rental contracts carefully to be sure your own insurance will cover you in the event of an accident, if the rental company's insurance is not adequate. Drivers of any vehicle, including jet skis and mopeds, should exercise extreme caution and ask the rental agency about local laws and procedures before operating the vehicle. The Department of State has received reports of equipment rental operators using locals to form a “mob” to intimidate customers into paying exorbitant amounts for damage to rented equipment. Operators of any vehicle that causes damage to other vehicles or injuries to other people may be arrested and held in custody until full payment is made, either in cash or through insurance.
Driving in Mexico
American citizens planning on driving to Mexico should carry a valid driver’s license at all times. U.S. driver’s licenses are valid in Mexico. Mexican law requires that vehicles be driven only by their owners, or that the owner be inside the vehicle. If not, the car may be seized by Mexican customs and will not be returned under any circumstances. We strongly recommend that you purchase a full coverage insurance policy that will cover the cost of bail. Please be aware that if you are involved in an automobile accident, you will be taken into police custody until it is determined who is at fault and whether you have the ability to pay any penalty.

Things to do when staying at The Reef (4)

Hi everyone,
We get asked all the time what can my younger kids do in Rocky Point besides the beach.
Have you been to the Aquarium in Las Conchas? Not yet? Well then, grab the family, get your camera or video recorder, and lets go! The Aquarium is a great place to take the whole family. The aquarium is equipped with so many different smaller fish tanks showing all the wonderful ocean creatures found in the Sea of Cortez. They also have some larger tanks with Eels, a Puffer fish, Stingrays, a Lobster (rarely seen in Rocky Point), and a very large, beautiful Golden Dogfish. The best feature is the 2 larger tanks with the Sea Turtles and Sea Lions that you are allowed to touch and feed. Squid and Fish Pieces are available for $1 per bag.
The Aquarium is located on the way to Las Conchas, before Cedo.
Open: Monday to Friday 10am to 3pm. / Saturday & Sunday 10am to 6pm.
Current prices may vary.
When we went is was: Adults $3.00 Children $2.00
All contributions are used for the support & maintenance of the Aquarium.
Call 011-52-638-38-20010 if you have general questions
CET-MAR Aquariums - Center for Sea StudiesAquarium exhibition, Mon.-Fri. 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM and Sat. & Sun. from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Located off Blvd. Fremont on the road to Las Conchas.

DON'T TEASE THE GOLDEN DOGFISH! it will remove fingers..

Snorkeling
If you are looking for a fun place to enjoy some good Snorkeling, then head to Rocky Point as soon as you can. We have had many wonderful adventures snorkeling around town in the past 5 years, and we plan to have many more. I, (Shea), even love to snorkel at night, so I can watch the Stingrays and other creatures come out and feed and play. It gets my heart pumping! I have seen large schools of fish (all sizes), Stingrays (many, many times), Jellyfish (Don't touch), and my personal favorite (photo above), the Shovelnose Guitar Fish.

Diving
Alright. Here's the scenario. You live in Arizona. Your certified to Dive. Where do you go? One of the local lakes? Dirty, but fun, I guess. Maybe to California? It's going be over 6 hours driving? Have you tried Diving in the beautiful Sea of Cortez yet? No!? Well, maybe it's time. If you are certified to dive, but don't have all your own equipment yet, just contact the Sun n Fun Dive Shop, located before the Old Port (fish market).

Things to do when staying at The Reef (2)

Are you looking for something fun for you and the kids to do, but you don't want to spend a lot of money? We can recommend the many Banana Boats all around the beaches in Rocky Point. You can take a slow, casual ride with the kids, or "kick it up a notch", and run wild on the Sea of Cortez. The Banana Boat ride usually only cost $5 per person. "That is a ton of fun for very little money", and it's well worth it.

Things to do when staying at The Reef (1)

If you want to see Rocky Point, "like you have never seen it before", try the Ultra Lights. Located near the enterance of The Reef RV Park, you will find several Ultra Lights waiting to take you on the ride of your life. With 17 years flying experience, my pilot, Alfredo, flew from The Reef RV Park, down the sandy beach, past the harbor and Malecon, over the town and back to The Reef RV Park (rides will vary). The ride lasted a full 15 minutes and offers the best view of Rocky Point you will ever see. We hope you will give it a try next time your in town.
15 minute rides have been only $40 in the past.
Speaking from personal experience, "It is well worth it!".

Weather at The Reef

...WEATHER NOTES...
http://rptimes.com/weather.html
January and February
Generally chilly, nights really cold and you can usually count on some wind. Most days are sunny and in the 60’s or even low 70’s if we’re lucky. We have had a lot more rainfall this past 1½ years.

March and April
Nice weather with most days being sunny. Usually a lot of windy days. Seems to run from the high 60’s to the mid-70’s.

May
The perfect month! Weather is warm, water is getting pretty warm, few windy days and all sunshine! Great time to spend the days at the beach!

June
Still pretty nice. Same as above with temps being in the 80’s. Great time to take that Bird Island Trip and snorkel with the sealions.

July
The humidity starts to creep in a little during this month. Toward the end of the month there is a lot more. Mid to high 80’s and sunny! days and nights are nice and warm.

August
Uugh. Humidity is here and the A/C’s are running but you won’t even notice it at the beach. High 80’s to low 90’s.Shorts and tanks all day and night!

September
Uuuuggghhh Our worst month for humidity but we usually never surpass 100°. Certainly much better than Phoenix and Death Valley! You don’t even notice it at the beach and most places are air conditioned now. Those of us who have to work here feel we could shower a few times a day! Some windy days but they seem few and far between.

Another perfect month. The water is a little cooler as are the air temps with most days being in the 80’s.

November

Spring Break 2009 (1)

Hi everyone,
We wanted everyone to start thinking early about where you are going to be spending your Spring Break 2009. Our park filles up quickly on these dates. One thing to keep in mind is that if you are going to be spending your time with us here in the park, The Big Parties only happens in the Bar! the park stays well behavied with 24 hour security. These are some images from the previous years of how busy the bar gets.

http://www.puerto-penasco.com/rockypointspringbreak09.html
It's almost that time again, Spring Break Rocky Point 2009. VERY IMPORTANT for this year 2009, make sure you have your BIRTH CERTIFICATE AND YOUR DRIVERS LICENSE, this is REQUIRED to gain entry back into the USA. If you have a US Passport, then you are set, you can use a passport in lieu of a drivers license and birth certificate. Getting your birth certificate is not a big deal, call your parents they probably have it on file!!! If not, get a copy of your birth certificate ASAP... It is only $10 (You can order it online, CLICK HERE!!). For US re-entry requirements, you can visit our passport page. This year, we are expecting approximately 80,000+ students from Arizona, California, Texas and New Mexico who pour into town to celebrate Spring Break Rocky Point. It's a huge party, and gets bigger every year, and 2009 will be no exception.
Quick links:
To get a copy of your birth certificate, click here.
If you need to book a hotel or condo online, click here. Just a heads up, MOST resorts are going to require that you are 25 years old and this policy is strictly enforced. You can get away with more at the hotels, we mean lower age limits of course.... Check out our special SPRING BREAK bookings page which tells you age restrictions at each hotel.

As in previous years, the local police really step up their enforcement over Spring Break, and 2009 is no exception - so have a good time, but be on your best behavior, folks. Spring Break tends to suck if you spend it in the drunk tank of a Mexican jail. If you go there to have a good time with your friends and treat everyone with respect, you are left alone to have FUN.

See you in 2009.

Jellyfish at The Reef June, July, August

Hi everyone,
Well the summer is just coming to a wrap up and I remebers something for those summer months for all our RVer's. Between the months of June thru Labor Day Weekend jellyfish are found in the waters in front of The Reef. They do give a good sting (burn) but with a little care you can go on with your day.
http://abcnews.go.com/Health/story?id=2283933
First, don't believe the rumors. Peeing on a stung bit of skin won't do much to relieve suffering, and you'll suffer some odd stares, too, doctors say.
Urine has not been scientifically proven to help in jellyfish stings, said Dr. Paul Auerbach, an emergency physician at Stanford University Hospital and an expert on jellyfish stings.
Instead, vinegar is the best first treatment, he said, when treating stings from North American jellyfish.
First: 'Deactivate' the Stingers
First things first, though. If stung by a jellyfish, be sure to get away from the jellies and out of the water to a safe area, he said. If a jelly tentacle is wrapped around an arm or leg, remove it using another object, such as a stick.
The next step is to inactivate the stingers, or nematocysts, that attach to the skin after brushing up against jellyfish tentacles. The best thing to use is acetic acid, or regular household white vinegar, Auerbach said.
In fact, the beaches of Australia are lined with vinegar stands, says Dr. Suzanne Shepherd, a travel medicine specialist and emergency physician at the University of Pennsylvania. Shepherd, who has herself been stung by jellyfish, said she takes vinegar with her when she heads out for a swim in the ocean.
Apply the vinegar by soaking a paper towel or thin cloth in vinegar and gently placing it to over the sting for 30 minutes, said Auerbach. Or pour the vinegar directly over the area. Isopropal alcohol or rubbing alcohol can also inactivate nematocysts, although neither it nor vinegar should be rubbed into the sting, Auerbach said.
Vinegar is Best, But Other Remedies Work, Too
Rubbing the sting will cause more nematocysts to fire and that will just mean more pain, he added. Auerbach said he carries a 50-50 mixture of vinegar and rubbing alcohol when he goes to the beach.
While vinegar is the best option, unseasoned meat tenderizer, baking soda, household ammonia, and lemon or lime juice are other things that can also prevent nematocysts from causing pain, he said. Baking soda has been used, particularly on the East Coast where stinging nettle jellies are common.
If using meat tenderizer, it must not be left on the skin for too long since it also can cause a rash.
Shepherd also recommends avoiding fresh water to treat a jellyfish sting because it could just cause the remaining nematocysts to fire.
Next: Remove the Stingers
Once the nematocysts are deactivated, it is safe to remove them from the skin. The best way is to gently apply shaving cream to the area and scrape them off using a safety razor, said Shepherd. If no shaving supplies are available, use sand and a shell to scrape away the nematocysts.
With the nematocysts off, consider using hydrocortisone cream to decrease skin irritation. If it's not strong enough, see your physician for a prescription steroid cream.
The rash from the sting can last anywhere from 24 to 48 hours, although this is highly variable, Auerbach said.
A jellyfish sting can produce an allergic reaction similar to a bee sting, so if there are any immediate signs of an allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing or hives, head to the nearest emergency room or call 911.
Small children that are stung over a large area of skin should go to the hospital, Shepherd said, as should people with stings that go on to become infected.
Can You Prevent Stings?
To prevent stings altogether, there is at least one lotion available in the United States that protects against jellyfish and other stinging marine life. If applied before going in the water, the lotion, Safesea, can help minimize the pain associated with stings.
Safesea's key ingredient is the same protective chemical that makes clown fish resistant to jellyfish stings. Auerbach, who was involved in designing clinical trials of the lotion and has part ownership in the company that makes the lotion, said the lotion has been shown to be safe and effective.
But the question still lingers, if no vinegar is in sight is urine better than nothing? While studies haven't proven it, Auerbach admits he's known a few people who said urine worked for them.

Laundromat, Showers, Bathrooms

Hi everyone,
Here are some pictures of our Laundromat, Showers, Bathrooms. We have plans for the future to put a seating area with tables and chairs out front with vending machines, pop machines etc.

Dry Camping: Sandy Beach

Hi everyone,
Many people ask about our dry camping. We do not have a dry camping area with in The Reef RV Park. There is and many get confussed "Sandy Beach" where many dry campers make thier home just to the West of us. In these pictures you can see the RV Park to the East and Sandy Beach to the West. They charge $5 usd as of today per car, showers are $2 per use, and they have a portable bathroom. The police patrol the beach. You can fill your tanks with water and dump for $7 usd in The Reef RV Park.

Things to Remember: Rocky Point Laws

Hi everyone,
We wanted to let people know of changes that have happened since last year. These are Laws that effect you as tourists that get over looked by many. The first thing I want to remind everyone is NEVER PAY A TICKET TO A POLICE OFFICER please. This only makes it worse for the rest of the tourist and even yourself. What happens when you pay-off an officer, they remember your car and keep stoping you, they learn that americans are afraid and ask for more money. The fines if you take the 10 minutes out of your day if your pulled over is 10 to 25 dollars. And most of the time it is even dismissed by the judge.

Here are some laws to remember
You must stop at stop signs (they say "ALTO")
Speed limit thru and around town is about 35mph
You must wear helmets when riding quads, golf carts etc.
Fireworks are promitted in areas up till 7pm, they fine you for noise orderance after 7pm, but we do not allow them in our park for saftey reasons.
Seatbelts are required at all times by everyone in the car.
You can not have open bottles of alcohol in your car.
You must be 18 or older to drink
Only guns under a 22 can be brought into mexico above a 22 to a 45 is criminal 45 and up is federal.
Drugs are the second largest punishment in mexico "federal prision time" so no drugs (guns are #1)
Fighting in bars etc.. you will go to jail
Yelling or high tempers with an officer will get you jail time.
Reckless driving is also not permitted

Some myths
You will not go to some horrible mexican prison for the things listed above except guns, drugs, or fights. Again NEVER PAY AN OFFICER please go to see the judge it is fast and keeps our officers honest and will make your future visits better.

View from a regular space

Hi everyone,

Many people ask what is the view like if you are in a regular space. If you get one of the corner spaces located behind the beachfront this would be your view. I still see ocean so thats great.

We met friends here in Yuma, some with American Coaches and some with other brands. We convoyed with them to Puerto Penasco, Mexico for ten days of fun on the beach at the Reef RV Park. Lots of sunshine, fresh shrimp, beachcombing, bargaining with the vendors for stuff we didn’t need, and oh yes a bit of tequila. Sandi and I made our own reservation and it went through smoothly

Myths and Rumors

Hi everyone,
We thought we would help put an answer to all those questions that come up. We generally get the same ones here in the office so I thought we would start with them.
Are you still open?
Yes, this is why you where still able to contact us. You can also look at the date of this post and comments as time goes on.

I here the park is closing next year? 2009?
This is another rumor as people see the condos get closer. We are part of a group called Groupo SBR which is the land owner of everything from the railroad tracks to the Cholla Bay. The idea for those who come here and know the layout of the land is just behind our storage area will be the beginning of a marina. This will extend to the Northeast all the way to Cholla Bay. At some point yes this will be a Park that is moved to a new location within the Groupo SBR property.

Why can I only make reservations 1 year at a time?
We do this because as time passes there maybe changes in price, spaces, policy etc. and we can inform our customers of these changes. Something to know though is the policy says one thing in 2008 and another is 2009 you will only be following the policy for the date you made the reservation on, not the arrival date.

How come when I make reservations there is no beach front available but when I arrive there are many beachfront spaces open?
When the reservation was made we did not have spaces available for the dates you requested but as time went on people canceled their reservations, opening up those spaces.

How come when I arrive there are beachfront spaces open but I can’t stay in them?
This will be for 2 reasons
1. The space is already paid for and we are waiting for the person to arrive.
2. Or there are areas in which we only rent the spaces on a monthly and yearly base.

How did my friend reserve beachfront a week after I requested beachfront and I did not get beachfront when I requested it?
This could be for only 2 reasons.
1. Your request was not for 4 nights (4 night Minimum for beachfront)
2. A customer with a beachfront space canceled his/her reservation after you made yours leaving it open for the next request.

How come when I arrived and when checking out after the weekend the same beachfront space I could have been in stayed empty?
The space was paid for in advance as our policy states and the person who paid for the space never showed up. We are unable to re-rent the space because of our policy with the customer and their receipt. We Guarantee your space from the arrival date to departure date. You never know if the person had trouble with their rig and traveling 2,000 miles only to get here 3 days late to find out we gave their space away. How would you feel?

If you have any other questions please post the in the comments area and we will answer them.
Happy RVing everyone

The little white spot in the near center of this picture is the Reef RV park, taken from the west on top of black mountain (condo high rises are closer today). I like the Reef as it's out of town, great location for quad riding which we do, and almost every site has a view of the water. If you prefer to walk around to some shops etc, other parks would be better suited such as Playa Bonita. Quad riding in/out of the Reef is speed controlled, so don't worry about someone flying thru the site creating noise and dust issues. It's also close to Cholla Bay & JJ's Cantina, one of our favorite "hole in the wall" stops for some Mexican food and a margurita.

We have gone down there for several winters now. We dry camp on the beach adjacent to The Reef RV Park for $5/day. Once a week we suck in the slides and waddle down the beach to The Reef for a $7 dump and fill, usually grabbing quick showers while dumping. The beaches are great, the people are nice, and it's only about 65 miles of good road from Likeville, AZ. There is a big supermarket (Ley's) in town. You can use either dollars or pesos most places. The cash registers in Ley's even switch over to dollars if you tell the clerk you are paying in dollars. We really like Puerto Peñasco. It's easy, safe, and fun.

Go there every year. Was there this year for February. Easy border crossing at Lukeville. Puerto Penasco is less than 80 miles from the border. Good road. Good weather. Good food. 4 or 5 rv parks. I drive a 40ft dp pulling a chevy. Easy drive to P.P. We stay at the Reef RV park. 30 and 50 amp service. Full hookups. Restaurant, laundry. Dry camping nearby. Good food. Friendly people. English spoken but it helps to try out the local lingo. Beautiful beaches.Nice walking on beach. Good food. Almost more Canadians than U.S. folks. Vendors on the beach.Schrimp, seafood. The Reef , large rv spots Right on the beach. Other parks like Playa Bonita and Playa Del Oro. Fairly nice. A bit smaller on rv spots. Good food. Many claim its not the real Mexico, but its enough Mexico for me. (good food)
aslo by the same user:
Showed up last year at Puerto Penasco without reservations. Less than a hundred miles over the border. Easy crossing. Stayed a month at the Reef RV park. Paid $500.00 for the month. Wasn't too bad for us. Plenty of space last year. "americanized" ? English spoken and the dollar is used alot but lotsa Canadians too. Number of parks are dwindling quickly as the high rises go up. Some say that Puerto Penasco isn't the true Mexico but the Mexicans living there disagree and its enough Mexico for me.

The Reef RV ParkThe Reef RV park is located in Camino la Cholla KM 7.5. It is at the end of the main resorts on Sandy Beach. It has a great restaurant on site called "The Reef" very popular for its seafood. We get a lot of good reviews on this restaurant. It is definitely worth trying. The restaurant is open daily from 8am to 11pm with a great list of dining selections. The Reef RV Parks offers a large list of amenities: open year round, laundry, security, pets allowed, showers, bar and dance club, mini market, tent camping and many more amenities. You have a choice of an ocean view ($) or beachfront spot ($$).
